The Oktoberfest festival in Munich, which originated in 1810 to commemorate the marriage of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, continues to maintain ties to its historical roots through modern traditions.

While the event has evolved from horse races on the ‘Theresienwiese’ into a massive international attraction, specific ceremonies now explicitly reference its royal origins. For example, Café Kaiserschmarrn maintains a daily tradition of cutting a multi-tiered wedding cake at 1:00 PM to honor the festival’s beginnings. Culinary staples such as Obatzda remain central to the festivities, and the event continues to draw high-profile visitors across the various tents.

As the 2026 festival reached its midpoint, Munich police reported a largely peaceful atmosphere despite an increase in interventions, which rose to 936 compared to 833 in 2025. Authorities noted 49 cases of dangerous bodily harm, including 11 incidents involving attacks with beer mugs. Specific violence included a stabbing of a 32-year-old British visitor and an altercation involving a 41-year-old man striking a visitor with a mug. Police also reported incidents of sexual harassment escalating into physical assault and continued seizures of prohibited knives.

Economically, the 2026 festival has seen a slight increase in costs, with the average price of a liter of beer rising by 2.38 percent compared to 2025. Prices currently range between 14.80 and 15.90 euros depending on the tent. During the second weekend, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder and Munich Mayor Dominik Krause fulfilled a wager by riding the ‘Olympia Looping’ roller coaster to demonstrate unity regarding Munich’s Olympic bid.
