On August 21, 2026, two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete was shot and killed in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The 38-year-old athlete was ambushed by masked gunmen while waiting in his vehicle for his gate to open outside his home. A 27-year-old woman traveling with Tete was also struck by multiple bullets and remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Following the incident, South African authorities arrested several suspects. One 22-year-old, Uzu Kuwana, was intercepted at King Phalo Airport and formally charged with murder and attempted murder. Three other suspects, aged 27, 27, and 28, were apprehended in Mdantsane and Scenery Park, with some facing charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms. A 30-year-old man was detained but released as a witness.

Legal proceedings have recently faced delays. On September 14, 2026, the Mdantsane Magistrates’ Court postponed a bail application judgment for Siphesihle Kolisa and Athandwa Gangala, who are alleged to be the hitmen involved in the shooting. The postponement followed the State’s introduction of a new ballistic report that reportedly links two recovered firearms to the killing of Tete and another victim. 

The defense has strongly objected to the late introduction of this report. Advocate Ayabonga Kampi, representing alleged mastermind Uzuzole Goqwana, raised concerns regarding procedural irregularities and stated he does not consent to the report being treated as admissible evidence.
