Archaeological excavations at the Zvygino II burial ground in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region have provided new insights into the Muroma culture. Researchers from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve identified 43 burials, including inhumations, a cremation, and several horse burials.

The findings suggest the Muroma community in the Oka River basin may have emerged in the late 6th or early 7th centuries, which is earlier than previously established. Notable discoveries include a high-status female burial featuring an elaborate ceremonial headdress adorned with cross-shaped fibulae, and male graves containing weapons such as spears, axes, and arrows.

Evidence from the site, including specific belt fittings and ornaments, indicates the existence of cultural and commercial exchange networks with neighboring Finno-Ugric groups and potentially Central Asia.
