The film utilizes family archives and footage from 2003 to document a journey to the Mustang region of Nepal and the history of the Ghami Solar School. The project is described as a personal endeavor based on footage recorded by Smutniak and her late partner, Pietro Taricone. The narrative, which features narration by their daughter Sophie Taricone, explores themes of memory and loss over a 23-year period. Following Taricone’s death in a 2010 skydiving accident, Smutniak continued their shared mission by establishing a school in the region in 2016 through a foundation named after him. ‘Mustang’ won the Audience Award at the festival, a prize Smutniak shared with Rafik Faria, director of ‘Congo Boy’. Smutniak noted that the film was created to share a “sense of hope,” exemplified by the community of children at the school. All proceeds from the film’s theatrical release in Italy, scheduled for November 2026, will be donated to support the children at the school in Nepal. Additionally, the documentary is slated to debut at the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival in Poland in 2027. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: Kasia Smutniak wins Audience Award in Rome for documentary Mustang Kasia Smutniak won the Audience Award at the Rome Film Festival for her documentary “Mustang,” which chronicles her efforts to build a school in Nepal in memory of her late partner. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kasia-smutniak-wins-audience-award-in-rome-for-documentary-mustang ### 2026-10-19: Kasia Smutniak presents Mustang documentary at Rome Film Fest Kasia Smutniak presented her documentary “Mustang” at the Rome Film Fest, chronicling a 23-year journey of memory and a promise made to the people of Nepal following the death of Pietro Taricone. 18 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kasia-smutniak-presents-mustang-documentary-at-rome-film-festival --- Cite as: Mustang documentary wins Audience Award at Rome Film Fest.
