Sources: 25. Developments: 11. The Nagoya Asian Games continue to feature a mix of political tension and diverse athletic achievements. Political controversy persists in baseball, where staff reportedly prevented Taiwanese fans from displaying towels with the word ‘Taiwan’, labeling it political expression. This led to disputes between spectators and organizers, while stadium signage explicitly prohibited the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Rising Sun flags. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an defended the fans, arguing that cheering for Taiwan should not be a taboo. Athletic successes have expanded across multiple disciplines. In track and field, Chinese sprinter Chen Yujie won gold in the women’s 100m with a record-breaking time of 11.06 seconds. In combat sports, boxer Lin Yü-ting advanced to the women’s 60kg gold medal match. In tennis, Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En-shuo secured the women’s doubles gold medal following an all-Taiwan final against teammates Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien. The match, which concluded with a tense tiebreak, drew media attention regarding a perceived lack of a post-match handshake; Chan noted she attempted to initiate the handshake as a representative of the national team, while Hsieh emphasized that “respect is paramount”. In the men’s singles, Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong claimed gold by defeating Wu Yibing, securing qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Other notable results include a bronze medal for the Taiwan women’s golf team. In gymnastics, the Chinese Taipei rhythmic gymnastics team improved from eighth in preliminaries to sixth place in the group all-around final. Additionally, 16-year-old Lau Hei-yu made history as the first athlete to represent Hong Kong in the modern pentathlon at the Asian Games, finishing 13th in the women’s semifinals. ## Claims - Taiwanese fans were stopped by staff for displaying 'Taiwan' towels during the baseball game against China.
