Namibia is implementing several strategic initiatives to strengthen its agricultural sector and enhance food security. Initial efforts focused on revitalizing abattoirs in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) and establishing public-private partnerships, including a N$3.32 million green scheme in the Ohangwena region.

To improve international market integration, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform and the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia launched a nationwide campaign to help communal cattle producers meet European Union residency requirements. These rules necessitate that cattle spend 90 days in a Foot-and-Mouth Disease-free zone, followed by 40 days on a single registered farm prior to slaughter.

Efforts to empower producers have also progressed within the sheep industry. Following significant interest from over 300 farmers in forming a producer-owned company, the industry officially launched ‘NamLamb’ to increase market opportunities and brand recognition. As part of this initiative, ten farmers representing ‘Team Namibia’ are set to compete against South African farmers at the Lamb Champs Invitational in October 2026.

Recent developments show Meatco is implementing a strategic roadmap for the NCA to revitalize abattoirs in Oshakati, Rundu, Outapi, and Eenhana. Additionally, the Ministry is engaging with the Namib Foods Group to boost local production. At the inaugural Agriculture Investment Conference & Expo in Windhoek, Deputy Minister Ruthy Masake stated the government aims for 80% food self-sufficiency by 2030, noting that reducing current food imports could save the country up to N$2 billion annually. However, stakeholders warned that recurring droughts, rising temperatures, and foot-and-mouth disease remain critical threats to a resilient agricultural economy.
