NASA’s Artemis program has transitioned from a strategic initiative aimed at establishing a sustainable lunar presence to the successful completion of a historic crewed mission. 

Following the program’s announcement as a successor to the Apollo era, the Artemis II mission concluded with the successful return of its four-person crew. The Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of San Diego, where NASA and U.S. military teams recovered the astronauts. During the mission, the crew broke a deep-space distance record of over 400,171 kilometers, surpassing the previous record held by Apollo 13.
