NASA has initiated preparations for the Dragonfly mission, a project involving a nuclear-powered rotorcraft designed to explore Saturn’s moon, Titan. In August 2026, NASA selected SpaceX to provide launch services using a Falcon Heavy rocket, with a contract valued at approximately $256.6 million. The mission is targeted for a launch window starting no earlier than July 2028, with an expected arrival on Titan in late 2034.

By September 2026, technical development progressed with the installation of the rotorcraft’s electrical harness onto the flight fuselage. Developed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, this system utilizes 5.2 kilometers of silver-coated copper wiring to facilitate power and data transmission. 

Additionally, the mission’s landing site has been identified as Ahmakiq Undae, an equatorial dune field near the Selk impact crater. The rotorcraft will serve as a mobile laboratory to analyze Titan’s environment, which includes liquid methane and ethane.
