NASA has launched the $4 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope into orbit via a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center. The infrared observatory is traveling to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 to investigate dark matter, dark energy, and the accelerating expansion of space.

Designed to complement the Hubble and James Webb telescopes, the Roman telescope features a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble’s. Its mission objectives include mapping the stars in the Milky Way, searching for exoplanets using a specialized coronagraph, and utilizing Type Ia supernovas to measure cosmic expansion. 

To handle the massive scale of data, NASA is collaborating with Google Quantum AI and USRA to apply quantum computing and machine learning through the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL). The telescope is expected to generate 1.3 terabytes of data daily, with the first scientific images anticipated in early 2027.
