In September 2026, he was elected as the first President of The International Assembly of Mosque Imams (IAMI) during the International Grand Imams Conference in Jakarta. This conference, involving delegates from 46 countries, resulted in the ‘Jakarta Understanding’ and focused on redefining mosques as centers for community empowerment and social unity. Following this election, Umar transitioned toward global peace diplomacy. In late October 2026, he participated in the “Unarmed and Disarming Peace” forum in Assisi, Italy. Organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio, the event provided a platform for Umar to advocate for religious diplomacy, arguing that interfaith dialogue should evolve into “tangible humanitarian action.” He utilized the forum to present Indonesia’s management of religious diversity as a model for international stability. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: Indonesia's Religious Affairs Minister to promote peace diplomacy in Assisi Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar will attend the Assisi peace forum in Italy to promote religious diplomacy and transform interfaith dialogue into humanitarian action. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/indonesias-religious-affairs-minister-to-promote-peace-diplomacy-in-assisi ### 2026-09-28: Nasaruddin Umar elected first President of IAMI Nasaruddin Umar, Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, has been elected as the first President of The International Assembly of Mosque Imams (IAMI) during the IGIC 2026 conference in Jakarta. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nasaruddin-umar-elected-first-president-of-iami --- Cite as: Nasaruddin Umar religious diplomacy activities.
