Archaeological research at the Abric Romaní rock shelter near Barcelona, Spain, has uncovered evidence of Neanderthal woodworking dating between 62,000 and 40,000 years ago. Analysis of 597 wooden remains and mineral molds preserved by calcium carbonate deposits revealed that Neanderthals used wood for various purposes, including spears, bark containers, and carved clubs or maces.

Further research involving a Neanderthal skeleton from the Shanidar cave in Iraqi Kurdistan suggests these wooden tools may have been involved in lethal encounters. A 15-millimeter circular perforation in the scapula of the skeleton is being investigated as a potential wound caused by a wooden spearhead. Researchers are currently evaluating whether this injury resulted from a deliberate attack or an accident during hunting.
