Actor Neil Patrick Harris has reflected on the circumstances surrounding his decision to come out publicly in 2006. Speaking on the ‘Great Company with Jamie Laing’ podcast, Harris explained that the rise of internet gossip blogs created significant pressure to address his sexuality to prevent salacious speculation.

Harris noted that while he and his husband, David Burtka, were already a couple, they often had to maintain privacy in public settings. He recalled instances at movie premieres where Burtka would avoid photographers to maintain appearances, a situation Harris admitted could make Burtka feel ‘less than’. 

The decision to go public was further motivated by a desire to control his own narrative following a publicist’s comment that he was ‘not of that persuasion’. To ‘get ahead of the story’, Harris worked with representatives to issue an authentic statement in November 2006 confirming he was gay.
