Netflix has premiered ‘El problema final’ (also referred to as ‘The Final Problem’), a four-episode Spanish mystery miniseries adapted from the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Set in the spring of 1959 on an islet near Mallorca, the production follows the investigation of a death at a hotel that initially appears to be a suicide but is revealed to be a crime, turning the isolated guests into suspects.

The story features José Coronado as Benjamin Basil, a retired actor who previously played Sherlock Holmes for twenty years. As a severe storm isolates the guests at the Hotel Ausländer on the remote island of Santa Agueda, Basil must act as an amateur detective to solve the mystery in the absence of police. He is aided in his investigation by a young mystery writer, Francisco Foxá, played by Martiño Rivas. The investigation specifically concerns the death of a guest, Elisa Mander.

Directed by Félix Viscarret, the series stars María Valverde, Martiño Rivas, Maribel Verdú, and Gonzalo de Castro. Described as a tribute to classic mystery literature in the style of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, the production utilizes a cinematic style reminiscent of old Hollywood and a 1950s aesthetic.

Following its release, the series has been noted as part of a successful wave of Netflix miniseries adaptations. ‘The Final Problem’ has achieved a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
