The 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, have been re-examined through the release of the Netflix anthology series ‘Monstruo: La historia de Lizzie Borden’. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the eight-episode season stars Ella Beatty, Charlie Hunnam, and Rebecca Hall. The production uses the historical case—in which Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the axe murders in 1893—to explore themes of patriarchal oppression, female rage, and violence. The series draws parallels between the Borden case and other historical figures such as Aileen Wuornos and Elizabeth Báthory. Recent discussions regarding the Netflix installment, ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’, have highlighted certain historical inaccuracies. These include the depiction of a romantic relationship between Lizzie and housekeeper Bridget Sullivan, for which there is no reliable documentation, and the suggestion of a link to the death of Bertha Manchester, despite historical timelines indicating Lizzie was in custody at that time. Capitalizing on this renewed interest, Breaking Glass Pictures is releasing ‘The Lizzie Borden Game’, a supernatural horror thriller. Moving away from the true-crime approach of the Netflix series, this film utilizes the Borden legend as a foundation for a contemporary story involving a group of friends and a deadly ritual. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-04: Lizzie Borden case resurfaces through Netflix series and new horror film The Lizzie Borden case returns to the spotlight via Netflix’s 'Monster' series and a new supernatural horror film, 'The Lizzie Borden Game', blending true crime history with fictional dramatization. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/netflix-releases-lizzie-borden-crime-anthology-series ### 2026-10-01: Lizzie Borden murder mystery remains a subject of debate The historical mystery of Lizzie Borden, acquitted of her parents' 1892 murders, remains a subject of intense debate and modern media dramatization, including the Netflix series ‘Monster’. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lizzie-borden-murder-mystery-remains-a-subject-of-debate --- Cite as: Lizzie Borden case resurfaces in media.
