The Netherlands is experiencing significant labor shortages across technical and construction sectors. While the number of registered plumbing companies has increased by nearly 60 percent since 2016, the industry still faces approximately 30,000 vacancies due to an aging workforce and rising demand from sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives.

Expanding requirements for housing, grid expansion, and infrastructure renovation have led the Economic Institute for Construction (EIB) to estimate a need for 73,000 new employees over the next three years. This shortage is compounded by intensifying competition for technical personnel, such as electricians and mechanics, as the Dutch Ministry of Defence seeks to expand its workforce.

Although vocational training interest is rising, the EIB notes that roughly 21,000 positions must be filled through external recruitment. However, potential reliance on foreign labor may be hindered by housing shortages and political sentiments regarding migration.
