Recent scientific expeditions in the Amazon rainforest have led to the identification of several new frog species across Peru and Brazil.

In the northern Peruvian Amazon, researchers discovered four new species belonging to the Oreobates genus: O. azulensis, O. chirimoto, O. foliaspectrum, and O. nigrumcompletum. These findings, published in the journal Diversity, were recorded in the Amazonas, Huánuco, and San Martín regions. Researchers utilized morphological and genetic analyses to confirm these frogs represent independent evolutionary lineages. Notably, O. azulensis was located near the Cordillera Azul National Park; its presence in the park’s buffer zone highlights the importance of protected areas in harboring undocumented wildlife. Further research is expected to determine if the species also inhabits the interior of the national park.

In the western Amazon of Acre, Brazil, scientists identified a new species named Adenomera varcena. Published in Ichthyology & Herpetology, the study highlights a case of ‘cryptic diversity,’ where species appear nearly identical but are genetically distinct. Unlike other members of the Adenomera genus that typically inhabit dry land forests, Adenomera varcena was found in flooded forests near the Moa and Crôa rivers.
