Scientists have identified a new species of mountain horned dragon, Acanthosaura syrax, in the high-elevation forests of Mae Wong National Park in western Thailand. The species was named in homage to the dragon Syrax from the series ‘House of the Dragon’ due to its yellowish coloration and small size.

Research conducted during expeditions in April and May 2025 at altitudes exceeding 1,300 meters confirmed the lizard belongs to a distinct evolutionary lineage. DNA analysis has since confirmed that Acanthosaura syrax is genetically distinct from its closest relative, Acanthosaura lepidogaster. Physical characteristics include the shortest neck and back crest scales documented within its genus, a diamond-shaped dark marking across the neck, and an absence of dark eye patches.

Biological observations indicate that females are larger than males, with the largest female measuring approximately 101.2 millimeters. The species exhibits high fecundity, with egg clutches ranging from six to 16 eggs.

Researchers from the Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University noted that because the species is restricted to a narrow strip of high-altitude forest, there are concerns regarding its potential vulnerability to extinction. This discovery brings the total number of recognized species in the Acanthosaura genus to 23.
