As the New York City Marathon approaches its 50th anniversary, organizers have announced significant updates to the event. For the 2026 race, the course will undergo its first major change in 15 years, specifically involving a rerouting of the mile 22 section in the Mott Haven area of The Bronx. This adjustment aims to reduce the number of turns in the borough from seven to five and minimize the impact on local businesses and residential access points, such as the NYCHA Patterson Houses.

In celebration of the milestone marking the 1976 expansion to a five-borough course, the New York Road Runners and Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani have announced a giveaway of 350 free grandstand tickets for spectators to view the final 200 meters of the race in Central Park. The event has grown significantly since its 1970 debut, now attracting nearly 60,000 runners from over 100 countries.
