This milestone edition celebrates the anniversary of the race expanding to cover all five boroughs, a change implemented in 1976. Approximately 60,000 runners from 160 countries are expected to participate, following a record-breaking year in 2025. The event remains a significant economic driver for the city. The New York Road Runners organization noted that similar racing events generated nearly $1 billion in economic impact last year. The elite field includes defending champions Hellen Obiri and Benson Kipruto, alongside wheelchair athlete Marcel Hug. Swedish runner Andreas Almgren, a former middle-distance runner and recent half-marathon world champion, is also set to make his marathon debut. Additionally, Yeman Crippa is participating in an effort to secure an Olympic qualifying performance. Beyond the competition, the marathon serves a philanthropic role, with organizers aiming for a $100 million fundraising goal. As the event nears, the NYPD is deploying thousands of officers and specialized units to manage security. Officials report that there are currently “no credible specific threats” to the race. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-28: New York City Marathon celebrates 50th anniversary of five-borough course The 50th TCS New York City Marathon begins November 1, featuring 60,000 runners and 2 million spectators across five boroughs. 21 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/new-york-city-marathon-to-feature-route-changes-and-record-participation ### 2026-10-27: Andreas Almgren prepares for New York City Marathon debut Swedish runner Andreas Almgren will make his marathon debut at the New York City Marathon, expressing confidence in his ability to compete against elite international runners. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/andreas-almgren-prepares-for-new-york-city-marathon-debut --- Cite as: New York City Marathon 50th anniversary details.
