Specific concerns include attempts by the China-based Purple Mountain Observatory to install terrestrial space infrastructure in New Zealand via a local company that was likely unaware of the military intelligence objectives. 

Furthermore, the agency warned of recruitment efforts targeting public officials through professional platforms like LinkedIn. These offers, often disguised as academic or consulting opportunities, are viewed as a risk for electoral interference ahead of the November 7 general elections.

The Chinese Embassy has consistently rejected these allegations, describing them as “groundless,” “baseless,” and part of a “wave of attacks and slander against China” intended to smear bilateral cooperation. Diplomatic tensions have been further exacerbated by recent friction following comments made by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters toward a Member of Parliament of Chinese origin, which prompted a formal protest from the Chinese Embassy.
