The National Hockey League (NHL) has commenced its 109th season, featuring an expanded 84-game schedule following a new collective bargaining agreement. The season opened on September 29, 2026, with the reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes facing the Florida Panthers.

The league is currently navigating a generational transition. While established icons like Alex Ovechkin—who recently signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals—and Sidney Crosby continue their careers, a new generation of social media-savvy superstars is emerging. Notable young players include Chicago Blackhawks captain Connor Bedard, Matthew Schaefer of the New York Islanders, and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini. Celebrini is expected to assume a major leadership role following a record-setting 115-point season.

Early season performance has seen the San Jose Sharks finding success through their young talent, despite a recent shutout loss to the Dallas Stars. Additionally, the Seattle Kraken have secured an early playoff position following dominant wins against the Calgary Flames, though they recently lost to the Edmonton Oilers. The league is building momentum ahead of the Milano Cortina Olympics.
