During a panel at New York Comic Con, Cage indicated that the move to television is intended to balance his workload, stating, “You can only do so many movies back to back to back... So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television.” HBO has officially confirmed that Cage will star alongside Antonio Banderas in the new season. Cage is set to portray Henry Logan, a detective based in New York, while Banderas will play Rai García. Both actors will also serve as executive producers for the production. The season will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York, shifting the setting from the previous season in Alaska. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027. Issa López, who served as showrunner for ‘True Detective: Night Country’, will return as showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer. López has indicated there will be thematic connections between this installment and the previous season. The executive producer team includes López, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Cage, and Banderas. The announcement follows the success of the fourth season, which reached 12.7 million viewers across streaming platforms. In related comments at the same event, Cage addressed his future working relationships, noting he will likely not work with Amazon again after refusing to sign an artificial intelligence waiver for the series ‘Spider-Noir’. Cage criticized Amazon’s stance on the technology, describing himself as “not an AI-friendly actor” and expressing an interest in collaborating with filmmakers who utilize traditional production methods to create content “from scratch and by hand.” ## Claims - HBO confirmed that Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage will star in the fifth season of True Detective.
