The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has established an Internet Governance Working Group to facilitate dialogue between telecommunications operators, internet service providers, and other stakeholders. This initiative follows an NCC survey indicating that most licensees were unprepared to implement the Internet Code of Practice (ICOP) 2026, specifically regarding cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) provisions.

The working group aims to address emerging digital risks, such as online fraud, privacy violations, and child protection, to create a more accountable environment. Complementing these regulatory efforts, the Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG), in collaboration with the NCC and the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), scheduled the 2026 Nigerian Peering and Interconnection Forum in Lagos to focus on strengthening internet peering and local traffic exchange.
