Nigeria is undertaking broad education reforms under the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ to enhance human capital development and educational quality. Initial efforts focus on teacher professional development, including the launch of a digital platform that has reached over 60,000 teachers and the development of a Comprehensive Teacher Policy to make continuous training mandatory.

Curriculum and structural reforms are also underway, including a shift toward competency-based learning in basic education and a seven-year moratorium on establishing new universities to allow existing institutions to improve infrastructure. Additionally, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has reportedly supported over 1.6 million students.

To expand access, the Ministry of Education is targeting an estimated 10 million to 20 million out-of-school children through nationwide mapping and the creation of a national education data platform. Strategies include establishing bilingual schools that integrate religious and conventional education, particularly in eight high-priority states. Furthermore, the government is emphasizing digital literacy and gender-responsive pedagogy through training workshops supported by UNESCO and the Government of Japan.
