The Nigerian Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have introduced the ‘Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content’. This program aims to bridge the digital divide by providing approximately five million students in public senior secondary and tertiary institutions with free daily internet access.

Starting October 1, 2026, eligible students will receive a daily allowance of up to 100MB of data to access approved educational websites and digital learning platforms. According to the NCC, this allowance is expected to provide between two and five hours of study time daily, depending on whether the activity is text-based or audio-based. The initiative is part of a broader government strategy to support human capital development and achieve a $1 trillion economy.

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa noted the program is valued at an estimated N180 billion annually. In addition to the data scheme, the government announced plans for regulated internet access for children under 16 to enhance online protection.
