The Nigerian Federal Government has expanded electricity transmission capacity in Lagos by commissioning eight new power transformers across four key substations: Apapa Road, Ijora, Alausa, and Lekki. These upgrades aim to address critical bottlenecks and improve the evacuation of available electricity generation.

At the Lekki Transmission Substation, capacity at the 330/132/33kV level has effectively doubled from 300MVA to 600MVA. The Apapa Road facility saw its capacity triple from 60MVA to 180MVA through the installation of two 60MVA transformers and modern gas-insulated switchgear. Additionally, 100MVA transformers were installed at the Ijora and Alausa substations.

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe stated that these interventions are intended to “remove electricity constraints and unlock economic growth.” Supported by the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) expects these improvements to provide a more reliable power supply to areas including Apapa Causeway, Ijora, and Amukoko.
