Nigeria is working to reduce its electricity metering gap through various regulatory and infrastructure initiatives. By June 2026, the national metering rate rose to 61.51%, following a significant increase in deployment during that month. In June alone, distribution companies added 203,521 metered customers, a nearly 95% increase compared to May 2026. Despite this progress, approximately 4,845,647 active electricity customers remain unmetered.

Performance among distribution companies (DisCos) remains varied. Eko Electricity Distribution Company recorded the highest metering rate at 88.70%, followed by Ikeja Electric at 87.91% and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at 81.38%. Ibadan DisCo reported the highest volume of new installations in June with 80,643 customers.

Under the $500 million World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), the Federal Government has installed 668,000 meters, representing roughly 60 per cent of the 1,033,000 meters delivered. This program seeks to eliminate arbitrary estimated billing. 

Following the April 2024 Electricity Act, approximately 17 states have established electricity regulatory commissions, with Akwa Ibom being the most recent in July 2026. To ensure smooth sector development, the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) has directed stakeholders to harmonize the implementation of the Electricity Act to address areas requiring further clarification and fine-tuning.
