The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is focusing on its dual mandate of regulating market competition and protecting consumer rights in Nigeria under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018.

To support these objectives, the commission has sought to enhance capacity building for journalists through specialized training in competition law and consumer protection. During a meeting with the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in Abuja, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Tunji Bello, represented by Executive Commissioner for Operations Louis Odion, noted that competition reporting is a “relatively new field within the Nigerian jurisdiction.” The commission is considering requests for training programs to help journalists navigate the nuances of competition law, noting that media coverage has been instrumental in raising the FCCPC’s public profile.

Additionally, the FCCPC has supported training programs for the judiciary through the National Judicial Institute to address the complexities of competition-related legal matters. 

In terms of enforcement, the commission mandates price transparency, requiring suppliers to display full prices in Nigerian Naira without hidden fees. Under Section 131 of the FCCPA, the commission also ensures product safety, holding manufacturers and retailers liable for damages caused by substandard goods. The FCCPC manages consumer grievances through physical offices and an online portal.
