Developments: 2. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council initiated an indefinite strike in Abuja on October 7, 2026, following an expired ultimatum to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The industrial action affects both public and private sectors and is driven by disputes over teacher welfare and career progression. Specific grievances include a vacancy clause that ties promotions to available positions, requests for eligible teachers to sit for examinations alongside newer cohorts, and the withdrawal of demotion letters issued under the Harmonised Teachers Retirement Age Act, 2022. While the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) dissociated from the strike to avoid academic disruption, the NLC and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have escalated the dispute. Labour leaders rejected claims by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that the strike is politically motivated, labeling the action a legitimate response to unresolved welfare issues. The unions further dismissed directives to implement a ‘no-work, no-pay’ policy and the use of attendance registers to monitor striking staff, describing such measures as ‘unconstitutional, illegal, provocative and unenforceable.’ ## Timeline ### 2026-10-12: Nigeria Labour Congress rejects Wike’s claims regarding FCT teachers' strike The NLC and NUT have rejected FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s claims that the ongoing teachers' strike is political, calling his ‘no-work, no-pay’ directive unconstitutional. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-labour-congress-rejects-wikes-claims-regarding-fct-teachers-strike ### 2026-10-07: Nigeria Labour Congress declares indefinite strike in Abuja The Nigeria Labour Congress has launched an indefinite strike in Abuja over teacher promotion disputes and welfare concerns, specifically challenging the application of a vacancy clause to educators. 12 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-labour-congress-begins-indefinite-strike-in-fct --- Cite as: Nigeria Labour Congress strike in Abuja.
