Developments: 2. Nigeria is implementing various initiatives to revitalize its livestock sector, primarily through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES). In Enugu and Ebonyi states, efforts have focused on infrastructure and professional recruitment. Enugu has hired over 160 veterinary and paraveterinary professionals to revive 17 clinics and transition livestock production toward commercialization. In Ebonyi, a project is underway to revive an abandoned veterinary center in Izhianmbo, which is expected to include a veterinary college, modern abattoirs, and grazing reserves. On a national level, the government is launching a Private Veterinary Service (PVS) programme to address the shortage of professionals in rural areas. This initiative aims to deploy 780 veterinarians and para-professionals to over 1,000 livestock clusters across 13 states. The programme seeks to improve disease surveillance and productivity for rural farmers, with early reports from Kwara State indicating that the initiative has already facilitated the vaccination of more than 250,000 animals. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-25: Nigeria to deploy 780 veterinarians to rural livestock clusters Nigeria's L-PRES initiative will deploy 780 veterinarians to 1,000 livestock clusters across 13 states to improve rural animal health, disease surveillance, and livestock productivity. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-to-deploy-780-veterinarians-to-rural-livestock-clusters ### 2026-09-21: Enugu and Ebonyi states launch livestock sector revitalization projects Enugu and Ebonyi states in Nigeria are expanding their livestock sectors through new veterinary professional hires and the revival of a major 295-hectare veterinary center to boost commercial production. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/enugu-and-ebonyi-states-launch-livestock-sector-revitalization-projects --- Cite as: Nigeria livestock sector revitalization.
