Cooking gas prices in Nigeria initially saw a significant decline, dropping approximately 39 percent from June highs to around N1,400 per kilogram in cities like Lagos and Enugu. This trend was driven by a massive increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports, which rose from 0.1 kilotonnes per day in May to 1.5 kilotonnes per day in June.

Despite recent reductions at the depot level—such as gantry prices lowering from ₦980 to ₦950 per kilogram following adjustments from the Dangote Refinery—residents in Lagos and Ogun State report that retail prices remain high. Consumers are paying between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500 per kilogram, a discrepancy of approximately 47.3% to 57.8% above depot rates. Residents have expressed frustration over this gap, alleging exploitation by marketers. While some marketers reduced rates by ₦15 to ₦30 per kilogram, these savings have not reached end consumers, and the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has not formally responded to the allegations.

By July 2026, Nigeria’s domestic LPG supply reached a 13-month high of 5,332 tonnes per day. Domestic sources now account for approximately 82 percent of total supply, with imports making up the remaining 18 percent. NLNG/SEPNU remains the largest contributor, supplying 2,031 tonnes per day, while the Dangote Petroleum Refinery provides 829 tonnes per day. However, long-term price trends show a massive increase from approximately ₦100 per kilogram in the early 2000s to fluctuations between ₦1,250 and ₦1,650 per kilogram in 2026, driven by inflation, foreign exchange rates, and transportation costs.
