Nigeria’s military leadership has focused on integrating human security principles with regional defense cooperation. Initially, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Olufemi Oluyede emphasized that military force must be supplemented by protecting civilians and building community trust to combat terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism.

Following these internal strategic focuses, the CDS engaged in regional diplomatic efforts with the ECOWAS Standby Force. Discussions in Abuja centered on advancing rapid support for the force and operationalizing the ECOWAS Counter-Terrorism Brigade. Concurrently, the Citizens Security Awareness Initiative defended the military’s professionalism, rejecting claims that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are linked to partisan politics.
