The Nigeria Police Force has taken steps to address welfare and insurance obligations for the families of deceased officers.

In early September, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu announced the disbursement of N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to the families and next-of-kin of 2,971 deceased officers. This payment was intended to clear a backlog of claims spanning from 2017 through 2025, following the recovery of outstanding balances from insurance companies.

During the 30th anniversary of the Nigeria Police Academy’s Cadet ASP Course 19/1996, DCP John Paul Echeta, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, confirmed plans to implement a N10 million welfare bond to support the families of fallen officers. Echeta reported that 51 members of the 1996 course died while in active service, including three members this year. He also appealed to the Inspector-General to address career stagnation and administrative challenges regarding promotions for the group.

Furthering the distribution of Group Life Assurance benefits, the Force recently issued payments in Cross River and Ekiti states. In Cross River, the Police Command presented 17 cheques totaling approximately N13.75 million to bereaved families. In Ekiti State, Commissioner of Police Michael Falade presented cheques worth approximately N9.8 million, stating the gesture reflects the Force’s commitment to personnel welfare and urging beneficiaries to use the funds for the education and support of the deceased officers' children.
