Discussions regarding Nigeria’s economic development have focused on the necessity of bridging the gap between scientific research and industrial application.

Initially, experts highlighted the untapped potential of the essential oils industry. Professor Olusegun Ekundayo, a retired expert in phytochemistry and organic chemistry, advocated for a ‘National Essential Oils Development Policy’ to address structural deficiencies. He noted that while Nigeria possesses abundant raw materials like lemongrass, eucalyptus, ginger, and citrus, the industry lacks the necessary structure, research funding, and standardization required to meet global demand in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food sectors.

Following these calls for sector-specific structure, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expanded the scope to broader academic commercialization. The government has announced a strategic shift in education funding, reviewing and halting new funding for foreign scholarship programs under Bilateral Education Agreements, particularly for courses already available domestically.

To redirect these resources toward domestic capacity, the government is introducing the Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Prize, a ₦365 million annual award to reward academic excellence and innovation. Alausa has tasked Nigerian universities and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) with transforming academic prototypes into marketable products, businesses, and jobs, aiming to move innovations from academic journals into full-scale production.
