Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation high-throughput communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B. Led by Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), the project aims to expand broadband coverage, broadcasting, and government communication capacities, particularly in underserved areas.

To manufacture the satellites, Nigeria has selected Israel Aerospace Industries and France’s Thales Alenia Space. This selection is intended to diversify technological dependencies and rebalance geopolitical risk following a dispute with China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) regarding an outstanding US$11.44 million debt related to the existing NigComSat-1R satellite.

The deployment is planned in two phases, with the first satellite projected to launch by the end of 2028 and the second expected between 2029 and 2030.
