In July 2026, Kebbi State announced a mass-wedding programme for 300 couples across its 21 local government areas, providing each groom with a N250,000 dowry and requiring medical screening. The initiative was paired with the enrolment of 50,000 poor residents into the state’s Social Health Insurance Scheme.

Following this, Kano State implemented a larger-scale scheme known as Auren Gata to support low-income families, fulfilling a campaign promise by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The programme, overseen by the Kano State Hisbah Board, involved medical examinations, marriage counseling, and workshops. Each bride received a dowry and a capital grant for small business ventures, with reports citing the grant as N100,000 or N200,000. Grooms and couples were also provided with essential household items, including fabric, rice, cooking oil, beds, mattresses, and blankets to assist in establishing new homes.

By August 2026, the Kano initiative was confirmed to have committed over ₦1.5 billion to support 1,500 couples. Each couple received N100,000 as a dowry and an additional N100,000 as seed capital for starting small businesses. Governor Yusuf emphasized that participants should uphold the sanctity of marriage through patience and mutual respect in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Further details from the August ceremonies held at the Emir’s Palace mosque indicate the program specifically targets vulnerable residents, including widows, widowers, and divorcees. The government-funded medical screenings were expanded to check for HIV, hepatitis, and genotype compatibility. This marks the second major mass wedding organized by the current Kano administration, following a previous event in 2023.
