Nigeria has implemented new quality standards for educational materials to eliminate substandard textbooks from the national curriculum. Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa established a 70 percent minimum benchmark for textbooks to qualify for national ranking, following an assessment that revealed some materials scoring as low as 25 percent.

Following the first phase of this ranking exercise, the Federal Ministry of Education released an approved list of textbooks for use between 2026 and 2028. This initial list covers Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1, and Senior Secondary School 1. To enhance “strengthening the monitoring and control of approved instructional materials and ensuring greater transparency in their selection, procurement and utilisation,” each approved book will now feature a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code. The ranking process is expected to continue in subsequent phases for other grade levels.
