Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has initiated emergency interventions for critical infrastructure following reports of severe structural damage and vandalism. Initial reports highlighted structural failures on the Carter Bridge in Lagos, caused by corrosion, inadequate maintenance, and illegal sand mining, as well as damage to the old River Niger Bridge where vandals reportedly stole heavy structural bolts. While the government aims to reconstruct the Carter Bridge within 24 months, efforts on the Niger Bridge have shifted toward security and immediate repairs. To combat ongoing theft of components such as expansion joints and iron bars, the Minister ordered the installation of CCTV cameras and solar-powered streetlights on the First Niger Bridge. This surveillance system is intended to provide live footage to police to assist in arrests. Additionally, inspections of the Second Niger Bridge revealed threats from erosion. Following an inspection that identified significant deterioration of the carriageway surface and theft of expansion joint steelworks, stanchion/steel truss nuts, and bolts, the Federal Ministry of Works announced a complete two-week closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha. Scheduled from September 7 to September 21, 2026, the emergency maintenance will be conducted by contractor SKECC. The work involves removing deteriorated asphalt and laying approximately 40mm of new asphalt wearing course. During this period, motorists are directed to use the Second Niger Bridge via Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State. While the government has promised traffic control personnel and safety barriers to manage the diversion, some reports have raised concerns regarding the technical approach to replacing structural bolts under tension. The ministry stated that work will proceed day and night to ensure timely completion. To support the closure, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have announced measures to manage traffic and ensure motorist security.
