In September 2026, various levels of the Nigerian government initiated significant fund releases to address retiree benefits and pension obligations.

At the state level, Ogun and Nasarawa released substantial funds to manage arrears. Ogun State allocated N6.75 billion for gratuity and additional pension benefits (APB) to bridge gaps between different pension schemes. Nasarawa State approved N2 billion to cover pension arrears and entitlements dating from 2013 to the present.

Simultaneously, the Nigerian Federal Government began disbursing exit benefits to retirees from treasury-funded Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Approximately ₦1.1 billion was distributed to 175 retirees who left the Federal Public Service in the first eight months of 2026. Under the Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme (EBS), civil servants with at least 10 years of service receive a benefit equivalent to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument. The 2026 Appropriation Act allocated ₦32.9 billion for this scheme, with ₦12.3 billion already released to a dedicated account at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Additionally, the Federal Government has begun paying ₦18 billion in severance benefits to 2,700 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced that 2,100 beneficiaries across seven batches have received payments, with the remaining 600 being finalized. This settlement follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu to resolve debts owed more than two decades after the airline's liquidation, utilizing biometric verification to ensure funds reach legitimate claimants and next of kin.
