In mid-October 2026, the Senate passed legislation to establish a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano. This follows a 2024 presidential directive to convert existing federal colleges of education into universities and a 2025 decision to rename the Kano institution in honor of the late statesman Yusuf Maitama Sule. Shortly thereafter, the Senate approved additional bills to establish a Federal University of Agriculture in Orogun, Delta State, and a Federal University of Education in Obudu, Cross River State. Further legislative measures included the creation of a Federal College of Agriculture in Owa-Olomu, Delta State, and a Federal Medical Centre in Ido, Oyo State. Senate President Godswill Akpabio noted these initiatives are intended to strengthen the education and health sectors. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-23: Nigeria Senate passes bills to establish new universities and medical center The Nigerian Senate has passed bills to establish new federal universities in Delta and Cross River states, alongside a new agricultural college and a medical center in Oyo State. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-senate-passes-bills-to-establish-new-universities-and-medical-center ### 2026-10-13: Nigerian Senate passes bill for Yusuf Maitama Sule University The Nigerian Senate passed a bill providing a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano to support its administration and teacher education development. 9 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigerian-senate-passes-bill-for-yusuf-maitama-sule-university --- Cite as: Nigerian Senate legislative expansion of education and salud.
