The Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) has been advocating for significant reforms to the nation’s data and educational systems. The institute has called for a comprehensive overhaul of the national census process, noting that the last official census was conducted in 2006. CISON leadership has warned that relying on estimates rather than accurate demographic data hinders effective economic planning, resource allocation, and public policy development.

In addition to census reform, CISON has advocated for the introduction of statistics into the secondary school curriculum to improve statistical literacy among youth. The Federal Ministry of Education has reportedly committed to including statistics in the next curriculum review.

During CISON’s third International Conference and Golden Jubilee Celebration, Vice-President Kashim Shettima joined CISON President Dr. Godwin Ebuh in emphasizing the need for strengthened data systems to support evidence-based governance. Shettima noted that without credible data, the government risks “confusing expenditure with achievement, activity with productivity, and political declarations with measurable progress.” He highlighted critical gaps in outdated population data, fragmented information systems, and a lack of accurate agricultural statistics.
