The Nigerian Senate amended the Federal Polytechnic Act to allow federal polytechnics to award Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech. Hons.) degrees in science, engineering, and technology-related programs, provided they receive accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Following these legislative changes, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu implemented measures to increase institutional autonomy by removing the requirement for federal universities to obtain recruitment waivers from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. The administration also upgraded several institutions, including the Yaba College of Technology and the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, into Federal Universities of Technology and Vocational Studies. To support these advancements, the President announced funding through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the National Research Fund, while noting student assistance provided via the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). ## Timeline ### 2026-10-18: Nigeria's Tinubu extends tenures for Immigration and Correctional chiefs President Tinubu has granted 18-month tenure extensions to the heads of Nigeria's Immigration and Correctional Services to manage succession gaps and ensure leadership continuity. 15 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-president-tinubu-expands-university-autonomy-and-upgrades-institutions ### 2026-10-15: Nigerian Senate amends law to allow polytechnics to award bachelor's degrees The Nigerian Senate amended the Federal Polytechnic Act, enabling federal polytechnics to award Bachelor of Technology degrees in science and engineering, subject to NUC accreditation. 10 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigerian-senate-amends-law-to-allow-polytechnics-to-award-bachelors-degrees --- Cite as: Nigerian tertiary education reforms.
