The Niigata mayoral election is developing into a three-way contest. Incumbent Mayor Hachiichi Nakahara is seeking a third term, utilizing his political networks from previous roles in the prefectural assembly and the House of Councillors.

Challenging the incumbent are two newcomers: Jun Hayatake, a management human resources consultant proposing private-sector perspectives to address declining tax revenues, and Manabu Aoki, a city council member running as an independent. Aoki has submitted his resignation from the council to pursue the race.

The election is scheduled for official announcement on October 11, with voting set for October 25.
