The family of Irish-born fashion designer Martha Nolan-O'Slatarra has filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit in New York Supreme Court against investor Christopher Durnan. The legal action follows the death of the 33-year-old East x East founder aboard Durnan’s luxury yacht, Ripple, in Montauk on the night of August 4-5, 2025.

The lawsuit alleges that Durnan engaged in assault, gross negligence, recklessness, and wanton conduct. While an initial post-mortem found no evidence of violence, an independent autopsy commissioned by the family suggested that assault may have played a role. A paramedics’ report noted that the victim’s body had dried blood on her mouth, chest, and head, and was cold to the touch upon arrival. The report also mentioned an unidentified male at the scene who claimed to have been in bed with the victim.

New details have emerged regarding the relationship between the parties. Text messages indicate that days before her death, Nolan-O'Slatarra told her business partner, Dylan Grace, that she was being ‘harassed’ by Durnan. Durnan, who had invested $250,000 for a 13 percent stake in East x East in 2022, had reportedly sent aggressive messages accusing Nolan-O'Slatarra and Grace of financial misconduct and fraud.

On the night of the incident, the pair reportedly transferred to the Ripple after a sunset cruise on another vessel, ‘Hell in a Bucket’. Durnan, who has not been charged with any crimes, has had his attorney deny all wrongdoing. The official cause of death remains pending from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
