Nordzucker AG has announced the closure of its sugar production plant in Nakskov, Denmark, following the 2026/27 campaign. The company cited structural overcapacity and intense competition within the European sugar market as primary drivers for the decision. CEO Lars Gorissen stated the move is necessary to ensure long-term competitiveness, noting that the Nakskov site requires significantly higher investment to maintain efficiency compared to other locations.

The closure is expected to affect approximately 150 jobs. While sugar production will cease, the facility is intended to continue operating as a service center for sugar packaging. The shutdown follows previous production closures by the company earlier in the year at sites in Slovakia and Finland. Additionally, the loss of surplus heat from the factory will impact district heating for approximately 4,700 customers in the Nakskov area.
