Discussions among education leaders have highlighted the state’s position as the lowest-ranked in the U.S. for public school funding, with specific calls for increased support for rural schools and students with special needs. Concerns have also been raised regarding the accountability of taxpayer-funded private school vouchers through Opportunity Scholarships. Efforts to bolster the education pipeline include teacher leadership programs designed to improve retention, particularly in rural regions. Simultaneously, the state is working toward a 2030 goal of increasing the number of residents aged 25 to 44 with degrees or industry credentials. To meet this target and combat worker shortages in healthcare and manufacturing, the state is utilizing community college initiatives and workforce alignment programs, while continuing to manage the funding sustainability of its early childhood education infrastructure. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: North Carolina focuses on education and workforce development goals North Carolina faces challenges in sustaining its early childhood education system and meeting a 2030 goal to have 2 million residents with degrees or credentials to combat looming worker shortages. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/north-carolina-focuses-on-education-and-workforce-development-goals ### 2026-09-23: North Carolina education leaders discuss funding and teacher support North Carolina education leaders and programs are addressing challenges in school funding, voucher accountability, and teacher retention through leadership initiatives and calls for increased state investment. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/north-carolina-education-leaders-discuss-funding-and-teacher-support --- Cite as: North Carolina education and workforce development.
