The North Cowichan municipal council has granted West Coast Pre Fab, a manufacturing company in Chemainus, a three-month extension to achieve compliance with local bylaws at its River Road property.

The company’s Chief Financial Officer, Chantal Clarke, requested the reprieve to finalize outstanding environmental, engineering, and permitting requirements. The company stated it is not disputing the need for compliance.

Issues at the site involve complaints regarding soil deposition and tree removal near Askew Creek, as well as the identification of nine unpermitted structures and various zoning violations. These violations include unauthorized industrial activity and the use of recreational vehicles as permanent dwellings. To date, the municipality has issued 157 bylaw offence notices totaling $17,600.
