North Macedonia is undertaking significant educational infrastructure and curriculum reforms. A three-million-euro project, co-financed by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Western Balkans Investment Framework, and the Council of Europe Development Bank, has reached 30 primary and secondary schools to rehabilitate physical education facilities and provide sports equipment. In addition to physical upgrades, the country is implementing vocational education reforms. Supported by UNICEF, the Swedish government, and the private sector, approximately 10,800 first-year vocational students are transitioning to modernized curricula. These reforms emphasize STEM competencies, digital skills, and green practices, supported by training for 569 teachers.

Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska announced that total investments in educational infrastructure have reached 78 million euros, affecting at least 300 facilities. To support the student population, the government has launched an 86 million euro program to modernize infrastructure, including the reconstruction of student dormitories. The ‘Stiv Naumov’ facility, funded by the government, the European Union, and the German Development Bank (KfW), now offers 1,150 beds. Efforts are also underway to complete long-stalled university buildings at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

To promote inclusion, the Ministry has issued a call to hire 85 Roma educational mediators for the upcoming school year—50 for primary and 35 for secondary schools—to reduce dropout rates and improve school access. However, the sector faces challenges with brain drain; Aco Ristov, President of the Regulatory Commission for Energy, noted that approximately 80 to 85 percent of technical graduates consider moving abroad immediately after finishing their studies, citing a disorganized state system as a primary driver for emigration.
