In July 2026, the Macedonian Ministry of Transport reopened a tender for 150 electric buses and 75 charging stations after a previous award was cancelled. Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski confirmed that four companies submitted bids, with technical requirements including specific seating capacities, wheelchair accessibility, and a four-year service guarantee.

Following an electronic auction, the Public Procurement Commission awarded the contract to a joint Hungarian-Austrian consortium consisting of IKARUS Electric Zrt and EVN, which provided the lowest-price offer. The total winning price was approximately 3.12 billion denars. The agreement established a three-phase delivery schedule over eighteen months: 30 buses and 15 chargers within six months, 60 buses and 30 chargers within twelve months, and the final 60 buses and 30 chargers within eighteen months.

The procurement process reached a final milestone in August 2026 after the Public Procurement Complaints Commission rejected an appeal, allowing the project to proceed. Following this rejection, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikolloski stated that the country is set to receive its first batch of 30 electric buses in December 2025 or January 2026. The full delivery of the 150 buses is expected to be completed within the 18-month timeframe.
