Engineers at Northwestern University have developed GlassTENG, a prototype for battery-free smart glasses designed to harvest mechanical energy from facial movements to power health-monitoring sensors.

The device utilizes triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to convert energy from actions such as blinking, smiling, jaw clenching, and eyebrow raising into electrical power. The system employs three specific sensors positioned on the nose bridge, temples, and near the ears to track physiological and behavioral signals, including pulse, chewing, and teeth clenching.

In testing, the technology demonstrated high accuracy in distinguishing specific movements from everyday activities. Early results showed the sensors could recognize teeth tapping with 99% accuracy and jaw clenching with 96% accuracy, while a machine-learning algorithm identified performed activities with 93.8% accuracy during tests with 20 volunteers. The technology aims to provide continuous, passive monitoring for conditions such as cardiovascular health, fatigue, and bruxism without the need for frequent charging or bulky batteries.
